First woman to desert US army for Canada ordered to return - Telegraph

We're making headlines around the world again. [A muted yeah.]

I thought this statement from The Toronto Star's coverage of the same story yesterday was the saddest comment of all on the whole affair:

"[Michelle Robidoux of the War Resisters Support Campaign] says the government is ignoring a motion passed by all three opposition parties in the House of Commons last June, urging the government to allow U.S. military deserters and their families to remain in Canada as permanent residents instead of deporting them to face possible jail time."

How can that be possible?

I mean, I know we're talking about our current government here, but really: how can that be possible?

This represents a significant break with the past.
