Release of Laura Gainey Transportation Safety Board Report Delayed Until After the Election

The Toronto Star has received conflicting reports from government sources about why the release of a report into the high-seas death of Laura Gainey was put on hold until after the election:

"A decision to withhold a report into the high-seas death of Laura Gainey while the federal election campaign is underway was incorrect and resulted from confusion over orders from the Prime Minister's Office, a federal spokesman said late Monday.

Earlier in the day, Aarin Masson of the Transportation Safety Board said the release of the report into Gainey's death in 2006 was on hold because the Prime Minister's Office had ordered an election campaign "blackout."

But Masson reversed that hours later, saying that discussions with PMO and Privy Council Office indicated the blackout should not have applied to investigative reports."

Members of the Gainey family continue to show incredible grace under pressure, indicating that while they are disappointed about the delay, their experience with the Transportation Safety Board has very been positive.

It's bad enough that an election campaign blackout of any type was engineered -- let alone one that ended up resulting in a grieving family having to wait even longer for the release of a report such as this one.
